Haven’t recorded a video for a while. Here is my guitar cover of “Because We Can” by Bon Jovi. This song is from Bon Jovi’s 2013 “What About Now” album. I noticed his more recent albums are more like pop rather than rock but regardless, I like the guitar solo parts of this song – it’s quite catchy and fun to learn.

Since I have recently started learning bass, just for the fun of it, I also recorded an instrumental version with a bass track, guitar tracks for solo and rhythm, along with a background drum track. The drum track is not played by me of course (I use an app to generate that).

The Scientist by Coldplay. A piano-driven song but still mellow to strum along on an acoustic guitar. Capo on 3rd fret to match the original recording.

The only tricky little bit is the G chord (relative to capo) marked as G* on the guitar chord chart. At the end of beat 4, there’s a short note that you will hear on the original recording before going into the D chord. I played the G shape but with my pinky finger moved to the 5th fret on high E string relative to capo.

It’s Christmas time … let’s do a Christmas song. This year, I have chosen the traditional “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”. There are many versions of this songs done by many artists. I like Jewel’s version so mine is similar but not exactly the same. Thank you Jesus for His humble birth and let us praise to the new born King!

May the blessings of Christmas fill your home and heart with peace, joy, and happiness. Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Here is a video of my guitar and vocal cover (Yay! my first vocal cover). Pardon my scratchy voice … still recovering from a nasty cold 😦

Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. It’s quite a fun song (and similar chord progressions to Wonderwall by Oasis).

For the rhythm part, I put a capo on fret 1 to avoid most of the barre chords while matching up the original recording (key: Fm). The melody part, I played with no capo.

This is the first time I try to record a multi-tracks video – rhythm, melody, guitar solo (not shown in video), outro. I didn’t do the intro part as I don’t know how or have the device to match with the original record’s tremolo effect.

Step 1: Record the audio and video tracks

  • For the audio tracks, I connected my Fender Mustang I amp directly to my computer with an USB cable and then used Audacity to record the separate tracks.
  • For the videos, I also recorded each of the rhythm, melody, guitar solo, outro part separately with a camcorder (at the same time while I recorded the audio tracks).

Step 2: Merge the audio tracks

  • Merge the separate audio tracks into one single track Audacity.

Step 3: Merge the videos

  • Downloaded the videos from the memory card in camcorder (they are recorded in MP4 format)
  • I used a free video editor, LightWorks to put all the parts together.

Step 4: Put it all together

  • Take the merged video in step 3,  mute the audio from the video
  • Sync up the muted video with the merged audio track in step 2.
  • Export the video to whatever format you like. That’s it.

Merging the audio tracks recorded from the amp is the easiest part of this whole exercise. The hard part is to sync up all the video parts – spent hours on Lightworks doing just that. There must be easier ways to do this!

Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies) by Chris Tomlin. This one took me a while to get up to speed with some fast chord changes. I play the song in the key of C like the original recording by Chris Tomlin. Can play it in key of G too, it sounds just as good.

He Has Come For Us (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) by Meredith Andrews. I learned this song during my Christmas break in 2013.
